Rouget's Rail

Colorful small bird with a cartoonish large-eyed appearance. Luminous yellow underparts, yellow-green upperparts, and dark rust-colored throat are present in both sexes, but female is slightly paler and not as strongly marked as the male. Overall can be very similar to Clicking and Trilling Shrike-Babblers, but lacks any reddish coloration on the forehead, has a more extensive silvery brow and nape, and is darker overall. Inhabits foothill and montane forests, where it joins mixed-species foraging flocks. Song is high-pitched, rapid, and repetitive: “tweeweeweeweeweeweewee.”

Chunky, small bird with short bill and tail. Male blue black above and on throat, bright yellow below and on forecrown. Female olive above and yellow below with grayish-white breast. Both sexes show extensive white on underside of tail. Often in pairs, with male perching and singing from tops of trees. Common in dry to humid woodlands. Common call consists of two clear, whistled notes, “tee dee.” Male distinguished from other euphonias by forecrown color and size, along with color of throat and underparts; male plumage identical to Purple-throated Euphonia. Female distinguished by presence of gray-white color in breast, along with color of undertail coverts and white underside to tail.

A small bird of lowland wooded areas with a fairly long, slightly curved, stout bill and yellow underparts. Male has a pale gray throat, a dark reddish cheek and wing patch, a purplish-blue forehead and shoulder, and bottle green on the sides of the throat, the back of the neck, and the crown. Female is fairly drab, with a grayish-brown head and an olive-green back and rump. Male unmistakable. Female similar to several other species, but larger, with a broader bill. Voice not well known, but probably gives a loud “whip!” similar to Brown-throated Sunbird.
