Paramo Seedeater
Catamenia homochroa
This rare seedeater is most often found around bamboo at the scrubby edge of temperate zone forest, up to near treeline in the Andes. Disjunct populations are also found in the Santa Marta Mountains in Colombia and the Venezuelan tepuis. The male is dark slaty gray with a blacker face, a contrasting pale pinkish bill, and rufous undertail coverts. Females are paler and browner than males, with dark streaks on the back. Note the warmer rufous undertail coverts and pale bill on females. Can be found singly, in pairs, or small groups, occasionally following a mixed-species flock through the understory. Compare with Plain-colored Seedeater, which is often found in more open grassy habitats.

Syrian Serin
Serinus syriacus
A small and elegant finch. More elongated than European Serin and much plainer. Note the unstreaked underparts and green wing coverts. Adults have a yellow face while young are browner. Call is a high-pitched trill, more buzzing than European Serin. Breeds in open woodland and scrub on rocky slopes of high mountains. In winter descends to arid and semi-arid habitats.
Gray-cheeked Green-Pigeon

Chunky green pigeon with comical lime-green “goggles” and a thick white bill. Male has a dark maroon back and shoulders, which the female lacks. Both sexes have a silvery-gray forehead and crown. Female may be confused with female Pink-necked and Orange-breasted Green-Pigeons, but note her gray crown, green spectacles, and bright yellow-green wing feather linings. Inhabits a wide range of wooded areas, from the lowlands into the foothills. Often in pairs, but will also gather in large flocks at fruiting trees. Gives a long, quavering coo, as well as more even-sounding cooing and odd chuckling calls.
Cocos Finch
Pinaroloxias inornata
Plump, short-tailed bird found only on Cocos Island, located in the Pacific Ocean about 300 miles southwest of mainland Costa Rica. Sexes look quite different. Adult male is almost all black with a dark bill. Female and young male are buffy brown and streaked all over; bill may be black or yellowish, and often have cinnamon wingbars. It is the most common bird on the island, and found in nearly every habitat.
