Redhead
Aythya americana
This attractive diving duck often gathers by the thousands on lakes or bays in the winter. Males have cinnamon-colored head, yellow eye, and gray body. Females are plain brown overall, a lighter blond color than scaup and Ring-necked Duck. Also note evenly rounded head shape. About the size of Greater Scaup, but slightly larger than Lesser Scaup and Ring-necked Duck—this can be helpful when they are together in mixed flocks. Best separated from Canvasback by head and bill shape and male’s darker gray body. Breeds on marshy freshwater ponds and lakes; winters in flocks on any large body of water, often mixed with other diving ducks. Dives frequently to reach submerged aquatic vegetation.

Sooty-faced Finch
Arremon crassirostris
Medium-sized sparrowlike bird; olive overall with contrasting yellow belly, white mustache line, dark gray face, and rufous cap. Range does not overlap with other similar-looking sparrows and brushfinches. Tends to be quite shy. Usually found in pairs or small family groups, often scratching through leaf litter or low in a tangle around a forested stream. Sexes alike.

White-bibbed Manakin
Corapipo leucorrhoa
Male is a tiny, plump, blue-black bird with a puffy white throat. Female has olive green upperparts, grayish throat, and yellowish underparts. Uncommon and local, in lower and mid-levels of forest or in forest edges. Male is unmistakable in range; female distinguished from other female manakins by the contrasting gray throat. Has some seasonal altitudinal movements. Voice includes soft, insect-like notes: “s-e-e-e-e-e-e-e”, often hard to hear. Restricted to the northern Andes of Colombia and Venezuela.

Dusky Tetraka
Crossleyia tenebrosa
Extremely rare and enigmatic tetraka. Dark olive-green overall, with a pale yellowish throat and ring around the eye. Chunky and short-tailed. Madagascar endemic that is known from a handful of sites in the northeastern rainforest at middle and low elevations. Inhabits the ground and understory and acts much like Yellow-browed Oxylabes, but lacks that species’ bold eyebrow. Shorter-tailed than Spectacled Tetraka, with a duller eye-ring. Call is a very high, thin “seet” given singly or in a quick series.
