Sumba Myzomela

Myzomela dammermani

A small honeyeater with a short, downcurved bill. Male is striking: blackish with a bright red hood and rump and a paler underside. Female is largely gray-brown save for a light wash of red on the throat and head. Singles or pairs inhabit the canopy of forest and forest edge in the lowlands and foothills on the island of Sumba. It is the only myzomela in its range, rendering it unmistakable. Vocalizations include uneven phrases of “tizew” notes, and harsher “tzit” notes.

Gray Butcherbird

Gray Butcherbird

Cracticus torquatus

Medium-sized ambush-hunter with a long gray bill with a dark, hooked tip. Black head and face with a white nape and throat. Upperparts dark gray, with white rump, mostly black wings (limited white), and black tail with narrow white tip. Rollicking, chuckling song.

Urubamba Antpitta

Urubamba Antpitta

Grallaria occabambae

Plump, mostly terrestrial bird with long legs and a short tail found at high elevations in the eastern Andes of southern Peru. Plumage is mostly chestnut brown but is slightly paler on the belly. Similar to Leymebamba Antpitta, but larger, longer legged, and lacks gray in the plumage. The white eyering helps to separate it from Ayacucho Antpitta. Voice is also very helpful for ID; depending on location, it gives either three quick whistles with a pause after the first, or just two whistles. Also sometimes sings a longer, decelerating series of around ten notes. Usually stays well-hidden on or near the forest floor. Formerly considered a subspecies of what used to be called Rufous Antpitta.

Purple-collared Woodstar

Purple-collared Woodstar

Myrtis fanny

Small hummingbird found in dry, scrubby regions of the Andes; also in coastal deserts in Peru. Male has a glittering blue throat bordered below by purple. Female lacks this and has a rusty wash on white underparts; the extent of this rusty color varies between individuals. Also note slightly curved bill. Male performs swooping U-shaped display flights, alternately giving high-pitched twitters and low-pitched mechanical sounds while doing so. Not known to visit feeders.
