Red-cowled Cardinal

Paroaria dominicana

A conspicuous inhabitant of woodland in the Brazilian caatinga, but it is also found in scrubby areas and urban parks where it forages on the ground in pairs or small groups. Note the red head and throat, mostly gray back, black wings, and black tail that is white below. Immatures have a duller orange head. The song is a series of fast melodic whistles.

The red-cowled cardinal was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. He placed it with the crossbills in the genus Loxia and coined the binomial name Loxia dominica. The specific epithet alludes to the black and white habits of members of the Dominican Order. The red-cowled cardinal is now one of six species placed in the genus Paroaria that was introduced by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1832. The species is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised.

Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl

Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl

Glaucidium costaricanum

Small owl, active during the day and night. Very similar in plumage to other pygmy-owls, but limited range at high elevation (mostly above 1000m) is a good starting point. Overall brown to rufous with white stripes on belly; look for small white spots on crown and bars on flanks. Sexes alike. Found singly or in pairs in montane forests. Listen for whistled song of doubled notes given on an even pitch.

White-spotted Wattle-eye

White-spotted Wattle-eye

Dyaphorophyia tonsa

A pied wattle-eye of lowland forests. Males are white below with an iridescent black belt. Overall iridescent black above except for the white spot over the eye, the white sides of the neck, and the white rump. Males also have purplish eye wattles that are larger above the eye than below the eye. Females are decidedly different, with reddish-brown throats, wings and backs, gray faces, limited white above the eye, a black crown, and a purplish eye-ring. Both sexes are similar to Chestnut Wattle-eye, but note White-spotted Wattle-eye’s white spots above the eye and the more extensive white on the neck of the males. Call is a hollow “pwoo,” sometimes doubled, given repeatedly about every half second. Also gives shorter “rick rick rick” calls like other wattle-eyes.

White-breasted Whistler

White-breasted Whistler

Pachycephala lanioides

Large, chunky songbird with thick hooked bill, found in mangrove vegetation of northern Australia. Male gray above, white below, with black crown connected to black-and-brown collar that encloses white throat. White throat recalls similar Rufous Whistler. Female and immature gray above, pale below, with extensive fine streaking that fades into an almost white belly. Compare Little Shrikethrush, which is smaller with a more obvious pale eyebrow. Loud whistling calls, including a two-note rising "toooo-whittt.”
