Whitehead
Mohoua albicilla
A small endemic songbird found only on the North Island of New Zealand. Note distinctive whitish head and underparts. Females and juveniles have cinnamon tinge to crown and nape. Often encountered in small feeding flocks that move quickly and loudly through the canopy with harsh chattering calls, trills, and slurs. Favors tall native forest and shrubs. Although a reluctant flier, the species is agile and acrobatic as it forages for insects, often hanging upside down. Male has a clear canary-like song. Adults can be seen feeding far larger Long-tailed Koel chicks, as this species is a favored host of that nest parasite.

Scarlet-rumped Cacique
Cacicus uropygialis
Medium-sized forest bird, mostly black. Look for combination of bright red rump (visible in flight) and light blue eye. Long, pointed, pale yellow bill. Usually in small flocks moving through the canopy of forest and edges.

Monk Parakeet
Myiopsitta monachus
Medium-sized parakeet, bright lime green above with whitish face and chest, pinkish bill, and blue wingtips. Native to South America, where it is found in various open habitats, especially rural agricultural areas and towns. In introduced range, can be found locally in large cities. Builds enormous stick nests, often on large structures like cell phone towers and power poles; "Cliff Parakeet" of arid southcentral Bolivia manages to build, quite impressively, on sheer cliffs. Listen for its harsh, screeching voice.

Torrent Flyrobin
Monachella muelleriana
A fairly small bird of treelined, rocky streams from the foothills to the mountains. White underparts, face and forehead, black wings, tail and back of the head, and gray back with paler rump. Sits on rocks or branches over a stream from where it makes sallies for insects. Found in the same habitat as Torrent-lark, but Torrent Flycatcher is smaller, and lacks the black back and face. Voice, a high-pitched, piping song or harsh rasping call.
