Black-winged Lory
Trichoglossus cyanogenius
A large, long-tailed lory of forest and secondary growth on the Bay Islands. Mainly red plumage, with violet mask, and black shoulder, flanks and upper tail. In flight, mainly red from below. Seen in pairs or small flocks. In range, the only other similar-sized red parrots are Black-capped Lory, which has black and yellow in the wing and a shorter, rounded tail; and Rainbow Lorikeet which has green wings and tail. Call, a shrill, ringing “kriik!” or double “kriik kruk!” with the second note lower.

Military Macaw
Ara militaris
Spectacular, huge, and long-tailed parrot, wiped out from most areas by capture for the pet trade. Found very locally in forested foothills, canyons, and adjacent semiopen areas with big trees. Usually in pairs or loose groups made up of pairs. Unmistakable, bright green overall with mostly blue wings from above and golden yellow below, and red-and-blue tail. Calls are deep, throaty roars that carry long distances.

Great Spinetail
Synallaxis hypochondriaca
Handsome spinetail with a highly restricted range, known only from arid Andean valleys southeast of the city of Cajamarca in northern Peru. It has a white throat and eyebrow, a streaky breast, and chestnut wings and tail. Plumage is similar to Necklaced Spinetail, but Great is much larger, and the two species do not overlap. Inhabits thorny scrub and cacti. Vocalizations include fast rattles and shrill, doubled chirps.

White-winged Cinclodes
Cinclodes atacamensis
Uncommon to fairly common in the high Andes, where usually outnumbered by similar but smaller Cream-winged Cinclodes. Favors streams and bogs with running water and also lakeshores. Generally less confiding than Cream-winged Cinclodes. Told from Cream-winged by brighter, rustier back and more contrasting white markings with broader wing stripe and big white tail corners as opposed to smaller buff tail corners on Cream-winged. Voice also quite different.
