Bare-throated Tiger-Heron
Tigrisoma mexicanum
A large but rather short-legged, primal-looking heron of mangroves and freshwater marshes in tropical lowlands. Often in areas with trees, but also around ponds in rather open marshes. All plumages have naked yellow throat skin (not always easy to see), greenish legs. Adult has gray cheeks, finely barred plumage, and rusty thighs; immature is boldy barred blackish and warm brown (hence the name ‘tiger-heron’).
识别特征
The throat is bare and is greenish-yellow to orange in all plumages. The adult has black crown and light grey sides of the head, the sides of the neck and the upperparts otherwise blackish narrowly barred buff. The median stripe down the fore-neck is white-bordered with black; the remaining underparts are dull cinnamon brown. The juvenile is buff coarsely barred with black, more mottled and vermiculated on wings; the throat, median underparts, and belly are whitish.<p>The flight is heavy, and the call is a hoarse howk-howk-howk. Males also give a booming hrrrowwr! call, especially at sunset. During emission of the call, the beak opens wide and undulations can be seen along the course of the throat from mid-thorax caudally.

Grand Cayman Bullfinch
Melopyrrha taylori
Endemic to Grand Cayman. A small flocking species of brushy and wooded habitats. Note the very stout bill with strongly curved culmen, and the white slash along the front of the folded wing. Male is glossy black, female is smoky gray. No similar species occurs in its range. Song is a complex buzzy trill that drops in pitch and then rises steadily again. Calls include a hard chip and high buzzy “tzee” notes.

A rather small, demure understory denizen resembling a cross between a robin and a flycatcher. Mostly dull brownish-olive with a rusty rump and a paler throat and belly. Juvenile is more mottled. A local and endangered bird found singly and in pairs in thick undergrowth of primary and secondary forest, thickets, and coffee plantations, resident in a narrow range along the Angolan escarpment between 810 and 1300 meters of elevation. Sits for long periods, sallying to catch insect prey. Calls include a soft series of descending whistles. May be mistaken for a flycatcher, but its furtive nature and preference for thick understory are unique within its range.
Cocos Cuckoo
Coccyzus ferrugineus
Attractive cuckoo endemic to Cocos Island, located in the Pacific Ocean about 300 miles southwest of mainland Costa Rica. It has tawny underparts, brown upperparts, chestnut wings, black mask, and yellow on the bottom of its bill. Tail feathers have broad, white tips that flash conspicuously as it clambers along branches. Inhabits rainforest, and is quite scarce compared to most other resident birds on the island.
