Speckled Wood-Pigeon

A large, entirely gray-brown honeyeater with a patch of dark facial skin and a long, slightly decurved, sharply pointed bill. Juveniles show a yellowish-green wash to wings and underparts. Singles and pairs inhabit forest, forest edge, and open wooded country. Larger than Buru Oriole, with dark facial area composed of bare skin, and longer, more pointed bill. A noisy bird, giving harsh, kingfisher-like “skidup” alarm notes, a repetitive “chuwee-chow,” and “wee-o-wer” calls.

Large, conspicuous hummingbird of tepui highlands. Green above and rufous below. Note extensively rufous outer tail feathers, which are easily seen as birds tend to flare tail frequently. Generally common at higher elevations (above 1000 m), especially at forest edge and in lower-stature, scrubby vegetation. Feeds on nectar and pugnaciously defends patches of flowers against other hummingbirds. Not shy and will approach to investigate observers. In territorial interactions, gives a rich, sharp note, often doubled, repeated incessantly, and similar to calls of more widespread Gray-breasted Sabrewing; also gives a single, ascending, burry note, possibly as an alarm call. No other hummingbird in highland range is as large or shows as much rufous.

The largest gull in the world. Huge, bulky, and large-billed. Adults have dark black backs and pale pink legs. Nonbreeding adults have very limited streaking on the head. Takes four years for immatures to reach adult plumage; intermediate plumages are often mottled and messy. Tends to look colder-toned overall, with more checkered upperparts and a whiter head than other immature gulls. Always note large size and thick bill. Most common along the coasts of the northeastern U.S. and Europe, but also occurs on large lakes (especially the Great Lakes). Often gathers in mixed flocks with other large gulls on beaches and mudflats.
