Himalayan Shortwing
Brachypteryx cruralis
Tiny, stumpy bird of dense undergrowth. Male is dark slate-blue with broad white eyebrows that give him the appearance of a furious little old man. Female is warm pale brown all over. In areas of overlap with Chinese and Lesser Shortwings, look out for the all-dark lower belly, which is white in those species. Inhabits hill and montane forest, where it forages in dense undergrowth, frequently in proximity to streams. Song is composed of high thin whistles with short bursts of clicking chattering mixed in.

Indigo-capped Hummingbird
Saucerottia cyanifrons
Medium-sized hummingbird with restricted range in central Colombia. Distinctive: all green with a contrasting blue crown, white leg puffs, and reddish lower mandible. Occurs in the middle to upper levels of forests, edges, and shrubby gardens from around 1,000 to 2,000 m. Visits feeders.
Mountain Gray Woodpecker
Dendropicos spodocephalus
A mid-sized woodpecker with a golden-green back and gray underparts. The crown is red in males and plain gray in females. Usually shows a large red patch on the center of the belly. Found at middle elevations in woodland, savanna, and cultivated areas. The range overlaps slightly with the very similar African Gray Woodpecker; Mountain Gray is distinguished by the lack of barring on the wing and undertail and by the large, deep red belly patch. The main vocalization is an agitated series of rising “k-k-kree” calls.

Long-tailed, long-legged understory bird. Bare facial skin is blue and pink. Found in spiny forest of southwestern Madagascar. Rather shy, and quickly walks away from any disturbance. Most common vocalization is a series of descending “cheeow” notes followed by a couple of low raspy notes. Similar to Red-capped Coua, but has a shorter tail and legs and some pink facial skin.
