Elegant Tern
Thalasseus elegans
Long-billed tern of the Pacific coast, from the U.S. to Chile. Pale gray above with shaggy black cap in breeding plumage; nonbreeding birds develop white forehead. Best field mark is the slender orange bill with a slight droop. Strictly coastal; commonly found on beaches and estuaries. Similar to Royal Tern but smaller and slimmer with a thinner bill. Harsh grating calls similar to other terns.

White-fronted Falconet
Microhierax latifrons
Tiny, compact, black-and-white falcon. Black above, with a white chest and pale orangish belly. Male has a white crown and face; in female, the white is replaced by rusty orange. Restricted to northern Borneo, where mostly unmistakable; in narrow range of overlap with Black-thighed Falconet, look for White-fronted’s white or orange crown and paler underparts. Like other falconets, frequently encountered in pairs or groups. Perches up on bare branches in open forest, forest edge, and clearings.

Moustached Flowerpiercer
Diglossa mystacalis
Unmistakable black flowerpiercer with a bold white mustache and a reddish vent. Some subspecies have a variable red and white chest patch. Sexes similar. Resembles a tanager with a slender hooked bill, and tends to hold its body horizontal as it forages in low shrubs in humid habitats around and above the treeline. Its song is a rapid, jumbled series of high whistles.

Yellow-vented Flowerpecker
Pachyglossa chrysorrhea
A tiny bird with a short, sharp bill and demonic red eyes. The namesake yellow vent is not as readily apparent as the golden-olive upperparts and the long black streaks on its snow-white breast and belly. Inhabits lowland and foothill forests, gardens, and edges. Like many other flowerpeckers, most readily found hanging around mistletoe. Gives quiet chipping and buzzing notes.
