Bismarck Pitta
Erythropitta novaehibernicae
A long-legged, plump-bodied, mostly ground-dwelling bird with a bright red belly, dark blue wings, a greenish back, a bright red collar, a darker red crown, a light blue chest, and a brownish face. Resident in primary forest and forest edge habitats. Unique within its range. Voice is a low, trembling, raspy double-noted whistle, “croooo-eeeee.”

The Bismarck pitta was formally described in 1878 by the Australian zoologist Edward Pierson Ramsay from a specimen that had been collected on the island of New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago. He placed it in the genus Pitta' and coined the binomial name Pitta novaehibernicae. The Bismarck pitta is now placed in the genus Erythropitta that was introduced 1854 in by Charles Lucien Bonaparte.<p>Four subspecies are recognised:

Glossy Black-Cockatoo
Calyptorhynchus lathami
Smaller brownish-black cockatoo of eastern Australia. Male fairly plain except for bright red tail panels. Female has blotchy yellow patches on neck and face and orange-red tail panels. Large bill used to feed on Allocasuarina and Casuarina seeds. The species is entirely dependent on these trees, and recently chewed seed-cones are good indicators of their presence. Usually observed in small groups rather than large flocks. Calls include drawn-out notes with a rougher, croakier tone than Red-tailed and Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos.
Bismarck Boobook
Ninox variegata
A rather small owl with a grayish-brown head, brown upperparts spotted with white, and whitish underparts barred with rufous. Common in most forests up to at least 1000 meters of elevation. Differs from the similar New Britain Boobook in barred rather than spotted underparts, lack of contrastingly dark chest, and lack of slim white eyebrows. Ranges unlikely to regularly overlap. Voice is a gruff, frog-like “kra-kra-kra-kra.”
Mottled Piculet
Picumnus nebulosus
Tiny woodpecker with a warm buffy-brown back and collar, and buffy belly with dark streaks. Males have a red forehead. Occurs in lowland humid forest and Araucaria forests with dense understory, including bamboo forests. There it forages at middle levels, singly or with mixed-species flocks.
