Philippine Spinetail

A little-known medium-sized, short-tailed swift found over forest, usually at higher elevations. Mainly black with obvious white throat and underwing patches. Wing shape is unusual, with a “cut-out” next to the body and pointed wing tips curved backward. Tail square, with spines that are difficult to see. Distinguished from other swifts in its range by the white marks under the wings. Voice unknown.

It appears to be reliant upon forested streams below 1,000 m and will tolerate secondary and selectively logged forest and even streamside vegetation within coconut plantations, close to forest edge.<p>IUCN has assessed this bird as near threatened.This species' main threat is habitat loss with wholesale clearance of forest habitats as a result of logging, agricultural conversion and mining activities occurring within the range. The close association with lowland forests suggests that this species may be highly susceptible to habitat loss through commercial logging, conversion for agriculture and plantation forestry, as well as urban developments and mining

Solitary Tinamou
Tinamus solitarius
Large, dumpy, almost tailless terrestrial inhabitant of the Atlantic Forest, where it walks quietly through forests with an open understory. This tinamou has a gray-brown barred back and vent, pale gray on the belly with a prominent pale stripe on the side of the neck. Very secretive, best identified by song, a series of “frru” whistles with long silences between them.
Providence Petrel
Pterodroma solandri
Heavyset, gray-brownish seabird of the open Pacific Ocean, with pale patches in the underwings at the primary feathers and indistinct pale feathering around the bill base. Upperparts sometimes show grayish, almost silvery grizzled appearance. High-arcing flight in high winds, as in other gadfly petrel species. Similar to dark-morph Kermadec Petrel, which shows white shafts in primary feathers in the upperwings, lacking in Providence.
Gray-hooded Gull
Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus
Distinctive gull. Breeding adults have a gray hood, pale eyes, and a red bill and legs. The back is medium gray and the wings have extensively dark flight feathers. Loses the gray hood in the nonbreeding season which is replaced by a dark cheek spot, while juveniles have paler bills and variably brown mottled wings and back.
