Savanna Nightjar

A large, robust, ungainly cuckoo with rufous wings and a long, broad tail. The underparts and back are streaked, and it has a distinctive white eyebrow. The rump and upper tail coverts are barred, unlike other coucals. It often moves clumsily, preferring to clamber about in rank vegetation or walk on the ground foraging for insects or small vertebrates. Its flight is labored and heavy. This species uses a wide variety of habitats with a thick understory, including savanna, woodland, forest edge, and wetlands. The song is a descending bubbling series, “bu-bu-bu bu bu bu bu”, that falls and then rises in pitch.

Extremely short-billed hummingbird found at high elevations in Colombia’s Santa Marta Mountains. It mainly occurs in remote areas with little access, and is rare and perhaps seasonal in the areas most visited by birders, such as El Dorado Nature Reserve. Male has a black back and green throat; the throat patch is reduced on young birds. Female has spotted underparts and white tail tips. Inhabits humid forest and often clings to flowers while feeding. Visits feeders on rare occasions.

A rotund, short-legged ground-dwelling dove that usually runs rather than flies when startled. Slate-gray belly contrasts with paler gray chest and head, and with purplish shoulders and back. No similar species occur in its range. Apparently rarely vocal, but has been heard giving a snarling sound.
