Gabon Coucal
Centropus anselli
A large, reddish-bellied forest coucal of Central African forests, occasionally found in more open and disturbed habitats. Most often detected by its call, which is a long or short series of hollow loud hoots, the last few usually lower, sometimes given as a duet. Overlaps locally with Black-throated Coucal, which has a black throat and a cream-colored belly.

The Gabon coucal is a large-sized species growing to 46 to 58 cm (18 to 23 in) in length. The sexes are similar, the adult having the head, sides of neck and back black, glossed with purple, the lower back and rump whitish buff, barred with black, the wings dark brown and dark chestnut and the tail blackish-bronze glossed green. The underparts are rufous-buff or tawny. The eyes are reddish, the beak black and the feet black. The juvenile is similar to the adult but the black colouring is mostly replaced by dark brown and is unglossed, and the wings are heavily barred and rufous.

The Gabon coucal is native to tropical western central Africa. Its range includes Gabon and the surrounding countries of southern Cameroon, southwestern Central African Republic, western Congo, central Democratic Republic of Congo and northwestern Angola. It inhabits virgin forest, secondary forest, forest edges, swampland and abandoned farmland.

The Gabon coucal is a skulking bird, not easy to see in the thick undergrowth, but it can be heard calling, particularly early and late in the day. It forages, mostly on the ground, feeding on grasshoppers, beetles, molluscs, frogs, birds, lizards and small snakes. It also scavenges around villages and encampments. Breeding takes place mostly in the rainy season, or in wetter regions, during the drier interlude between two wet seasons.

Epinecrophylla gutturalis
Tiny bird; forages actively, probing into dead leaves suspended in vegetation. Note small size, overall brownish coloration, and pale eyes. Pairs or family groups join mixed-species flocks in the understory and are rarely seen away from them; does not ascend to middle strata or canopy. Most common call is a thin, descending trill.
Pale-breasted Illadopsis
Illadopsis rufipennis
A chunky, mid-sized, remarkably drab babbler with a white throat and brownish breast. Found in the understory of rainforest at low and middle elevations, usually in small groups. Shy and skulking; rarely seen unless searched for. Very similar to Brown Illadopsis, but slightly different vocally, with higher and more inflected whistles. Also slightly paler below and more richly colored above, with a cleaner white throat. Most often detected by voice. The highly variable song consists of single-note pure whistles or short whistled phrases separated by pauses, often in a three-note ascending series; listen for a haunting clear monotone whistle. Also gives scolding calls, sometimes accompanying the whistled song.
Brown-throated Parakeet
Eupsittula pertinax
Green above with paler yellowish belly and long, pointed tail. Average size for a parakeet. Distinctive brown cheek and upper breast usually quite obvious; can be trickier to see in flight. Almost always in small flocks, which feed inconspicuously on fruit in gardens, forest edges, and second growth. More obvious in flight; listen for grating, squeaky calls.
