Pale-headed Jacamar

Brachygalba goeringi

Small jacamar with a pale brown head and bluish-black wings and tail. Smaller than other jacamars in range, with a shorter tail. Note the brown breast and chestnut band on the upper belly that contrast with the white throat, belly, and undertail. Sexes similar. No overlap with the superficially similar Brown Jacamar. Locally common, found in pairs or groups in the top of trees or exposed branches in dry forest and edges, gallery forest, and savanna woodlands. Song is a series of high pitched notes that accelerate to end in shorter trills “weet, weeet, weeet, t’weet-t’ t’weet’ t’weet’ weet’ ti’ti’ti’t’t’t.”

The pale-headed jacamar's diet is insects, mostly Lepidoptera and Odonata. It often perches on emergent branches in pairs or small family groups and sallies from there to catch its flying prey.
The pale-headed jacamar nests in burrows in earth banks. Nesting has been noted in Venezuela during April and May.
The pale-headed jacamar's song is a series of high "weet" notes that increase in speed and pitch and ends with a trill [1].

Dulit Frogmouth

Dulit Frogmouth

Batrachostomus harterti

Large frogmouth of Borneo’s central mountains. Inhabits foothill forest (typically 600–1230 m). Heavyset, with a whiskered face and bright white spots on the wings. Similar Large Frogmouth is generally found at lower elevations; Dulit has broader (as opposed to Large’s sharply triangular) white wing spots, strong pale barring on the throat, and overall darker coloration. Song is a low, resonant, melancholy-sounding “hooooo’m”; call consists of barks, typically given in pairs: “woo’WUP!”.

Gray Antwren

Gray Antwren

Myrmotherula menetriesii

Small antwren of rainforest midstory. Males are pale gray with black and white wing bars. Throat is gray in most of its range, but in southwestern Amazonia the center of the throat is black (but never as extensive as the broad black bib of Long-winged Antwren, which also is overall a darker gray). Females are light buffy tan below, gray above, with no wing bars, appearing more two-toned than very similar but more evenly-colored female Long-winged Antwren. Often can be heard singing in the early morning, an even paced series of rising “wuee” notes at a pace of about two notes per second.

Cyprus Scops-Owl

Cyprus Scops-Owl

Otus cyprius

A small dark owl, intricately marked with black streaks and fine barring. Bright yellow eyes are set in a pale face ringed with black. The ear tufts can be prominent, especially when seen on a day roost, but sometimes are nearly invisible. Found in open woodlands, orchards, and parks. Active at night, when usually detected by monotonously repeated song, a single plaintive hoot that carries quite well. Within its restricted range, can only be confused with Little Owl, but separated by smaller size, ear tufts, and gray rather than brown overall coloration.
