Yellow-breasted Forest Robin
Stiphrornis mabirae
A short-tailed understory robin with a bright yellow-orange throat. Also shows a dark-green back, buff belly, and a white spot in front of the eye. Most often encountered by its song: a duet, in which the male gives high-pitched whistles and the female makes an accompanying chatter. Similar to Orange-breasted Forest Robin (potentially very limited overlap in range), but underparts more extensively yellowish-orange. Otherwise most likely to be confused with Lowland Akalat, but can always be distinguished by the white spot in front of the eye, as well as the dark-green rather than rufous-brown back, and the buff rather than white belly.

Diard's Trogon
Harpactes diardii
Chunky, sluggish bird of lowland and foothill tropical broadleaved forests. Male has brilliant crimson underparts, a black head, and a triangular pinkish nape. Female is brown-headed with a sharp and solid white line between head and red breast. Red-headed Trogon female has a thinner, incomplete white collar. Often perches quietly at middle levels, frequently in pairs. Song is an echoing series of rising hoots that levels off.

Common, usually alone or in pairs, piercing flowers in shrubby areas and forest edges. Call a high-pitched note typical of flowerpiercers; song a four-note “chip ZEET ZEET zeet.” No overlap with other flowerpiercers in its limited range in the Pantepui region of southern Venezuela and adjacent Brazil.

A fairly common member of mixed flocks from around 1,200–2,400 m, in cloud forest and edges.
