Rufous-capped Warbler

Chunky and large-billed bishop. Male shows yellow shoulders and rump in all plumages, but is otherwise the black in breeding plumage and streaky brown in non-breeding plumage. The female is brown and heavily streaked below, without yellow highlights. Found in grassland, open woodland, heathland, and cultivation. Usually in flocks, especially when not breeding. Song consists of simple twitters and sizzling notes. Females could be confused with many other species but usually associate with males, which show distinctive yellow shoulders and rump.

Small, subtly beautiful, gray-brown duck with a black eye-mask, long neck and wings, and dark bill. Vaguely resembles a female pintail. Both sexes are similar but males sport a more prominent shaggy crest. In flight looks pallid, with whitish underwings, pale secondaries, and dark wingtips. Mostly silent. Typically found in shallow, freshwater or brackish wetlands with abundant emergent vegetation.

A large, shy, stocky bird of lowland and foothill forest interior of south eastern New Guinea. A distinct black crown contrasting with white cheek and throat, containing very fine, black dots. A messy, splotched, black collar joins the crown on the back of the neck and gets narrower to the throat. Chest and belly are buffy with small black spots becoming finer towards the belly. Could co-occur with Black-capped Catbird, but Ochre-breasted is smaller, is usually found at lower elevation and has a white cheek. One call is a ringing, high-pitch “chink!”.
