Sumatran Cochoa
Cochoa beccarii
Bulky and sluggish inhabitant of Sumatra’s highland forests. Resembles a cross between a large thrush and a small crow; both sexes are glossy black with an electric-blue tail, wing panel, and crown. Males have a dark face, whereas females have a buffy one. Dull naked red skin around the eye can be evident at close range. Like other cochoas, its inactive habits can make this species difficult to see as it perches up in dense vegetation. Song is a haunting mournful whistle.

Hooded Grosbeak
Coccothraustes abeillei
Handsome, chunky finch of humid evergreen and pine-evergreen forest in foothills and highlands. Usually in pairs or small groups, feeding on fruit in canopy or seen in flight high overhead, when best detected and identified by call. Note the stout, pale greenish-yellow bill and contrasting black wings with a big white to pale gray panel. Male has black hood and yellow body. Female has black cap and dingy pale underparts.
Bamboo Warbler
Locustella alfredi
Mid-sized warbler with a long tail. Dark brown overall, with a white throat and pale eye-line. Found very locally in middle-elevation habitats with a dense ground cover, including bamboo, forest, marsh, and lush grassy areas. Rare species that is not often seen. Most likely to be detected and identified by its distinctive song: a ratcheting up-and-down “dee-ka dee-ka dee-ka…” series which can last for several seconds. Very similar to Evergreen-forest Warbler, and best distinguished by its different song.
Black Honeyeater
Sugomel nigrum
Tiny nomadic honeyeater with thin decurved bill, found across arid inland Australia. Male has completely black upperparts and black hood that extends down the center of the breast to a rough point. Female gray-brown above, with mottled dark marks on pale brown underparts. Often attracted to areas of flowering Eremophila bushes. Call a long, high-pitched whistle, repeated slowly.
