Great Barbet
Psilopogon virens
This largest of the barbets is colorful, but often appears all-dark from a distance. No other barbet in its range combines the features of a massive pale bill, black head, and dark olive back. Sluggish and shy; tends to stick to dense forest canopy, where it is difficult to see. Its loud hooting song (typically a series of two repetitive notes) is often the only indication of this species’s presence. Also gives a harsh, screaming “karrrrr” that has a gull-like quality.
识别特征
The great barbet has a blue head, large yellow bill, brown and green-streaked body, belly and a red vent. The plumage is green. It is the largest barbet species with a body length of 32–35 cm (13–14 in) and a weight of 192–295 g (6.8–10.4 oz).
分类信息
Bucco virens was the scientific name proposed by Pieter Boddaert in 1783 for a great barbet that had been described by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1781 based on a specimen collected in China. It was illustrated in a hand-coloured plate engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet.
It was placed in the genus Megalaima proposed by George Robert Gray in 1842 who suggested to use this name instead of Bucco. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the following great barbet zoological specimens were described:
Molecular phylogenetic research of barbets revealed that the birds in the genus Megalaima form a clade, which also includes the fire-tufted barbet, the only species placed in the genus Psilopogon at the time. Barbets formerly placed in this genus were therefore reclassified under the oldest genus name of Psilopogon.
Four great barbet subspecies are recognised as of 2014:
Results of a phylogenetic study of Asian barbets indicate that the great barbet is most closely related to the red-vented barbet (P. lagrandieri) occurring in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

分布与栖息地
The great barbet is a resident breeder in the lower-to-middle altitudes of the Himalayas, ranging across northern Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan, Bangladesh and some parts of Southeast Asia, as far away as Laos.

行为
The great barbet's nesting season is from April to July. It typically builds nests in tree holes. Both male and females take care of the young. Its diet consists mainly of fruits and insects. The male's territorial call is a very loud kay-oh. The alarm is a harsh keeab, and another call is a repetitive piou-piou-piou-piou.

Madagascar Plover
Anarhynchus thoracicus
Small plover with a brown back, pale underparts, and a black chest band. Distinctive head pattern, with one black stripe behind the eye and another across the forehead. Rare Madagascar endemic that is found along the western and southern coast. Preferred habitat is open fields with very short grass, and adjacent coastal mudflats. Acts like a typical plover, running and plucking food from the ground. Similar to Kittlitz’s Plover, but has a chest band. Duller juvenile can still be identified by its vague breast band. Smaller and paler than Common Ringed Plover, with a more complex head pattern.

Wahlberg's Eagle
Hieraaetus wahlbergi
A small brown eagle with a slighter head and weaker beak than in larger brown eagles. A short crest gives the head a distinct squared-off look. In flight its crucifix-ilke shape is distinctive: straight-edged wings and a long straight-edged tail are most often held closed. Also occurs in pale and intermediate morphs, but dark, chocolate-brown coloration is the most common. Movements are complex, but it is mostly an intra-African migrant, breeding in the south (August to March) and occurring year-round farther north. Inhabits woodland, savanna, and farmland, hunting a broad range of vertebrate and insect prey both from perches and on the wing.

Asian Rosy-Finch
Leucosticte arctoa
A dark, thickset brown finch. Males throughout most of the species’ range have black faces and throats, and pink-suffused wings and flanks; the Yakutian subspecies is deeper brown on the wings and has no trace of pink. Females have no pink and are paler on the face and throat than males. Breeds above the treeline in barren rocky areas, but descends into lowlands and foothills during the winter. Often forages in open areas such as beaches and fields.
