Puff-throated Bulbul

Alophoixus pallidus

A large crested bulbul of tropical forests, usually found in the canopy foraging on berries. Body is a light yellow-green, while the wings, tail, and crown are brown. “Puff” of the white throat is slight and not an obvious feature. In the northwestern part of its range, it overlaps with the similar White-throated Bulbul, which has a more scraggly crest, more extensive white on the throat and face, and olive-green wings. Chatters with explosively harsh and barking quality; groups can be very loud and cacophonous.

识别特征

The puff-throated bulbul is a large (23 cm long) bulbul with olive upperparts, yellow underparts, and puffy white throat feathers. It is similar in appearance to the white-throated bulbul but with duller underparts. It has black feet and brown iris and bill. Males and females are visually indistinguishable.

分类信息

The puff-throated bulbul was originally described in the genus Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Alternate names for the puff-throated bulbul include the olivaceous bearded-bulbul, olivaceous bulbul and white-throated bulbul. The latter name should not be confused with the species of the same name, Alophoixus flaveolus.<p>Seven subspecies are recognized:

行为

The puff-throated bulbul is a regular but not an obligate cooperative breeder. Groups can comprise one or more breeding pairs and breed either cooperatively or non-cooperatively. In cases of multiple breeding pairs in a single territory, the pairs nest separately. The female builds the nest and incubates and broods the young. Males and helpers aid in feeding the nestlings and fledglings. Nests are open cups typically located in the understorey.

Bristle-thighed Curlew

Bristle-thighed Curlew

Numenius tahitiensis

A large shorebird with a long, curved bill. Similar to Whimbrel but warmer brown and with a cinnamon-colored rump. The bristly feathers on the upper legs are visible at close range. Breeds in upland tundra; during the nonbreeding season occurs in wetlands, sand dunes, rocky shores, pastures, and golf courses. Almost exclusively occurs in remote, hard to reach areas throughout the year, though does winter in reasonable numbers on the Hawaiian Islands (especially Oahu). Call is a loud “kee-oo-ee”, notably different than the common call of Whimbrel.

Fiji Island-Thrush

Fiji Island-Thrush

Turdus ruficeps

Notably variably but generally dark thrush with orange bill, eyering, legs, and feet. Found on almost all islands in Fiji, but abundance varies significantly between islands. On some islands only found at the highest elevations, while on others occurs more widely. Forages at all levels of forest, including on the forest floor. Calls include harsh chupping calls, often given in bursts.

Azores Bullfinch

Azores Bullfinch

Pyrrhula murina

Restricted to São Miguel Island in the Azores; found in steep-sided valleys in laurel forests. Medium-large, plump finch with a strong, deep bill and short, rounded wings. Both sexes resembles a female Eurasian Bullfinch, with a black crown, face, and neck, but Azores are dark brown above and light brown below unlike the reddish-orange bellied male Eurasian Bullfinch. Tail and wings are largely black albeit with a white bar. The call is a soft melancholic “phew.”
