Pale-bellied Mourner
Rhytipterna immunda
Medium-sized, dull flycatcher; resembles a Myiarchus but has smaller bill, rounder head, and little contrast between breast and belly. Locally distributed and poorly known; found in seasonally inundated and scrub woodlands on weathered white sands. Inconspicuous and best located by voice; behaves sluggishly, sallying to foliage for insects; also eats fruit. May be found alone or in loose association with other species. Distinctive voice is a rich, slurred whistle, Schiffornis-like in quality and unlike any other species in habitat.

Black-sided Flowerpecker
Dicaeum monticolum
A Bornean highland specialty, this is for the most part the only flowerpecker inhabiting the island’s montane forests. Male is striking, with a glossy dark blue back and bright red bib. Female is duller, with a gray head, yellow-olive back, pale yellow flanks and rump, and a pale throat; no other female flowerpecker has this patterning, and other flowerpecker species do not overlap significantly in range anyhow. Forages actively at all levels of forest. Clicks loudly and persistently; also gives high thin “tseeep”s.

Louisiade Pitta
Erythropitta meeki
A very shy, and seldom seen ground bird of lowland and foothill rainforest. Bright red belly and blue chest separated by a black band. Brown-hooded appearance but darker in the throat. Blue wing and green back. No similar species in range. Vocalizations not well-known, but probably quite similar to Papuan Pitta.

Brown Noddy
Anous stolidus
Dark-bodied tern of tropical offshore waters, rarely seen from mainland. Breeds in colonies on rocky and sandy offshore islets. Sometimes found with offshore feeding flocks of boobies and other terns. Feeds by picking from the surface, not plunge-diving like most terns. Adult solidly dark brown with white cap. White limited to the forehead on immature.
