Holub's Golden-Weaver
Ploceus xanthops
Large weaver with a heavy black bill and pale eyes. Juveniles dull, with brown eyes; they can be identified by their overall structure and tendency to associate with more distinctive adults. Found in savanna, woodland, scrub, and cultivation. Usually nests near water. Vocalizations are typical of weavers, “chek” notes and a sizzling “radio static” song, though somewhat lower-pitched. Other golden-weavers are smaller and don’t have pale eyes.

Coal-crested Finch
Charitospiza eucosma
Handsome finch with a spiky crest. Males have a black band from the head to the center of the belly, a silver back, and brown-yellow underparts. Female lacks the black band. Occurs in savanna with shrubby areas and scattered trees, and also in caatinga habitat. Mostly forages on the ground, but also can be seen in low trees and bushes.

Tanganyika Masked-Weaver
Ploceus reichardi
A typical red-eyed masked-weaver with a plain olive-green back and pink-brown legs. The breeding male has a black face mask extending midway up the forehead, surrounded by a strong burnt-orange wash that spreads to the breast and flanks. Female and juvenile are duller, but their breasts are tinged orange-yellow, flanks brown, and bellies white. Pairs and colonies are localized residents of reedbeds, wetlands, and adjacent woodland, in a very narrow global range between southwestern Tanzania and the Saisi River in northeastern Zambia. The ranges of most similar masked-weavers do not overlap, but breeding male Katanga and Southern Masked-Weavers are yellower than Tanganyika, lacking chestnut tones, and breeding male Lake Lufira Masked-Weaver has black mask extending past the hind-crown, and strong chestnut underparts.

Long-tailed Parakeet
Psittacula longicauda
Medium-sized green parakeet with red cheeks and black stripes above the eye and below the cheek. Male is brighter-colored than the female, which has less extensive red on the cheeks and a black instead of red bill. Like other forest parakeets, usually encountered shooting past overhead while screaming raucously. Long filamentous tail feathers not always present.
