New Caledonian Parakeet
Cyanoramphus saisseti
Chunky medium-sized parrot with a long tail, bright green plumage with slightly yellower underparts, and a red forehead and eyeline. Some blue in the flight feathers most visible in flight. Uncommon and local; found in remnant patches of higher-quality habitat and often encountered feeding on the seeds of casuarinas. Calls relatively high-pitched and nasal, higher-pitched than the calls of Horned Parakeet.

Yellow-vented Myzomela
Myzomela eichhorni
A small, mostly black bird with a decurved bill, a red throat patch, and a bright red rump. Tail black. Female similar, but duller brownish below. Found in any habitat with trees or shrubs. The only myzomela in its limited range. Voice is a loud, high-pitched “tseep-tseep.”

Gray-hooded Flycatcher
Mionectes rufiventris
Small flycatcher that is largely olive above and cinnamon below with a gray head. The bill is two-toned with a pale base. Found in the understory of humid forests, second growth, and forests edges. Males may display in groups giving a low nasal “bayo” song.

Magpie Mannikin
Spermestes fringilloides
Large waxbill with a big bill. Shows a black head, brown back, and black scallops along the sides of the breast. Found in bamboo, moist scrub, moist cultivation, lush savanna, and forest edge. Quite scarce across most of its range. Call is a descending “teeiw”. Superficially similar to Bronze Mannikin but larger and bigger-billed, with an all-black head and distinctive scallops along the breast sides.
