Mimic Honeyeater

A striking red and deep purple-blue parrot with a fairly long tail. Underside red except for dark chest band, red head with broad dark stripe through eye, and deep blue crown patch; back and tail also dark, and wings show extensive red markings. Juveniles show more blue on crown. Unique within its limited range in the Sangihe Islands. Found in pairs or groups in forest, forest edge, and nearby plantations. Gives harsh screeches, singly or repeatedly, most often in flight.

A medium-sized bird of montane forest canopy. Male has a yellow belly, black upperparts and bib, and orange flight feathers. Note the 2 outlandishly long, antennalike feathers protruding from the side of the head. Female has gray-brown upperparts and whitish underparts with dark scaling. Male is unmistakable. Female is somewhat similar to female lophorinas and parotias, but is distinctly smaller and grayer with buffy under the base of the tail. Voice, a weird, insectlike, continuous rattle sounding rather like radio static. Sometimes given while waving its long head feathers about in its courtship display and bouncing up and down.

Large, slightly ungainly raptor with long and very broad wings, a shortish tail, and a conspicuously big head. Pale belly and underwings contrast with the darker head in most adults, but juveniles have pale heads. All age groups have a tendency to look a bit disheveled. On perched birds look for the owl-like face and unfeathered legs. Hunts over open areas, spending lots of time hovering with rowing wingbeats into the wind.
