Malayan Crestless Fireback
Lophura erythrophthalma
A rare, compact pheasant of damp tropical lowland rainforest, especially peat swamp forest. Dark overall with bright red facial skin and a cocked, vertically-flattened tail. Males have fine vermiculations on the wings, deep orange (fire)back, purple rump and pale orange tail. Females are dark blue all over. Exceedingly shy, typically moving in pairs or small groups. Female is similar to Salvadori’s Pheasant male but the 2 species do not normally co-occur and the latter has often has its tail pointing downwards. Gives a relatively high-pitch “chick!” followed by a low “takrow”.

The Malayan crestless fireback or Malay crestless fireback (Lophura erythrophthalma) is a member of the family Phasianidae. It was previously known as the crestless fireback when it was lumped together with the Bornean crestless fireback. The two species were separated into two monotypic species based on obvious plumage differences, most notably the virtually unmarked dark plumage of the male. The Malayan crestless fireback is found in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.

Willow Tit
Poecile montanus
Active little inhabitant of coniferous and mixed forest, birch woodland, willow and alder scrub. Very similar to Marsh Tit, and often best separated by its differently whistled song (more helpful in western range than in eastern). Gives various high-pitched and scolding calls; generally narrower vocal range than Marsh Tit. Often in scrubbier habitats than Marsh Tit; sometimes visits feeders. On Willow Tit, note pale wing panel (vs. rather plain wings of Marsh), slightly larger and messier black bib, and brighter buffy flanks.
Mouse-brown Sunbird
Anthreptes gabonicus
A sunbird that is closely tied to water, most often encountered in mangroves, farmlands, and along large rivers as far inland as Mali. Gray-brown above and dingy gray-white below with distinctive bright white spectacles and a relatively large, short bill without much of a curve. Could be confused with other plain-colored sunbirds, but note its distinctive white spectacles and close association with large rivers and coastal areas. Calls and song are similar to those of other sunbirds, consisting of short, metallic whistles.

Incandescently beautiful but sluggish and surprisingly hard to detect, this is a species of moist lowland and foothill forest. Male has a black head, bright red nape and underparts, brownish-orange back, and black-and-white-barred wings. Female is brownish with a yellow breast and belly. Both sexes have bright blue eye-rings and bills. Gives a series of gulpy squeaks: “kyew, kyew, kyew, kyew”.
