Rufous-vented Paradise-Flycatcher
Terpsiphone rufocinerea
This relatively short-tailed paradise-flycatcher is often found near forest edges and around villages and towns in gardens. Both sexes have gray heads and undersides with blue bills and blue eye-rings, as well as a red back, red wings, red tail, and most importantly, a red vent. Males are similar to females but have longer central tail feathers and darker glossy black heads. Similar to Bates’s Paradise-Flycatcher, but Rufous-vented Paradise-Flycatcher males have longer central tail feathers and darker heads with a more prominent crest. Some individuals are best left unidentified. Songs are similar to those of other paradise-flycatchers, consisting of repeated, whiny whistles “two-two-TEE-TEE-two-two-ter” or clearer “tweer-tweer-tweer” sounds, with variations in pitch and number of notes. Calls include whiny, rasping “heh” notes as well as other chatters and dry trills.

Fiery Topaz
Topaza pyra
A large, spectacular hummingbird. Unmistakable in range: bronzy-red body with a black head, a green throat and rump, and a long tail with elongated central feathers. Very similar to Crimson Topaz, but apparently little to no range overlap. Occurs in lowland rainforest in the western Amazon basin, often around blackwater streams, where it perches for long periods and occasionally sallies out to catch insects. Can also be seen around flowering trees.
Black-faced Sandgrouse
Pterocles decoratus
A small and intricately marked sandgrouse. The distinctive male has a black mark across the face and onto the throat. The female is plainer. Both sexes have a dark belly and a white band on the breast. Found in dry savanna and thornscrub habitat. Female resembles some other sandgrouse, but is identified by the combination of small size and the white mark on the breast. The call is a low-pitched “chut-to-la,” which is often given in flight.
Straight-billed Reedhaunter
Limnoctites rectirostris
Note the long straight bill. Brownish above, paler below, with a well-marked eyebrow, and rufous wings contrasting with an olive-brown back. Closely associated with fresh water, occurring in marshes with shrubs and trees. The song starts with sharp clear notes, followed by a high-pitched trill.
