Crow Honeyeater
Gymnomyza aubryana
Large, mostly black honeyeater that is now rare and local in remnant patches of primary forest. Black plumage accentuated by patches of bright red facial skin. More likely to be mistaken for a New Caledonian Crow than other species of honeyeater on the island, however the more heavily-built crow lacks the red facial skin and has a notably thicker bill than the honeyeater. Not very vocal; the loud, ringing song is mostly heard during a short period in the breeding season (September-October). Also gives a harsh, crow-like rasping call.

Indian Scimitar-Babbler
Pomatorhinus horsfieldii
Striking tuxedoed babbler with a slightly downcurved banana-yellow bill and bright white eyebrows. A foothill and montane species of forest, forest edge, and dense scrubby growth. Clambers and bounces about along branches and in the undergrowth, typically in pairs or small flocks. Song variations include brief series of hooting calls, accelerating and jumbled in the second half. Calls include various rattles and hoots; often duets.
Tongan Whistler
Pachycephala jacquinoti
Male striking, with bright golden underparts and neck, olive wings, and a deep black head, chest, and tail. Female mostly olive-yellow with a grayish cap and a pale throat. Found in primary and sometimes secondary forest, but generally avoids villages and gardens. Song consists of a complex mix of whistles ending in a loud, far-carrying whipcrack.
Allen's Hummingbird
Selasphorus sasin
Extremely similar to widespread Rufous Hummingbird; identical in plumage except for males' solid green back (which can be shown by Rufous too). Breeds only along a narrow strip of coastal California and southern Oregon. On females and immature males, the only way to separate them from Rufous is by the shape of the tail feathers, which is extremely difficult to determine without good photographs.
