Nonggang Babbler
Stachyris nonggangensis
A medium-sized brown babbler with pale eyes and a lopsided white crescent bordering the back half of the cheek. Short-tailed and large-headed in profile. Dark coloration and relatively simple head markings make this species unique in its very restricted range. Highly selective in its habitat requirements: found only in seasonal karst-dominated rainforests, where it moves about in noisy flocks.

The Nonggang babbler (Stachyris nonggangensis) is a recently described species of bird in the family Timaliidae. This species was first observed by the ornithologists Zhou Fang and Jiang Aiwu while surveying the Nonggang Natural Reserve (弄岗自然保护区) in Guangxi, China, in February 2005. The type specimen was captured in January 2006, and the species was formally described in 2008. In appearance it is similar to the sooty babbler (S. herberti), but differs in having a pale iris, a white crescent behind the ear, a white throat patch with black spots, and a black bill. In general behaviour it resembles a wren-babbler of the genus Napothera in that it prefers running to flying, and seems to spend most of its time on the ground foraging for insects between rocks and under fallen leaves. Its natural habitat is karst seasonal rainforest that, following selective cutting, is dominated by Burretiodendron hsienmu. The known range is currently restricted to the Nonggang Natural Reserve, but since similar habitat also exists in northern Vietnam and southeast Yunnan, China, it is possible the species may also be found there.

A little-known cuckoo from lowland rainforest. Slender with long, thin bill that droops at tip. Males have dark cap, and red eye and eye-ring. Females have grey head and dark bill. Perches upright and motionless in sub-canopy. Voice a whistled, 2-note call with short first note, followed by loud descending note, “pu piiuuu!”. Similar to Tawny-breasted Honeyeater, but Long-billed Cuckoo is much less active with barring on the undertail. From Dwarf Koel by lack of white face mark and longer, thinner bill
Kungwe Apalis
Apalis argentea
Plain apalis with gray upperparts and white underparts. Very localized and poorly known species of montane forest of the Albertine Rift. Often joins mixed-species flocks. Vocalizations are not well documented, but does give a single, repeated “trrik” note as well as a more two-part “tri-ka” note. Very similar to Gray Apalis, but separated by the paler head which lacks brown tones.

Fairly large hummingbird, sleek and long-tailed with straight bill. Male is entirely emerald green with small blue throat patch only visible at some angles. Female has spotted green breast; note conspicuous white mustache stripe and white spot behind eye. Found in forested habitats and edges; visits feeders.
