Virginia's Warbler
Leiothlypis virginiae
A mostly gray warbler with yellow undertail coverts and a thin white eyering. All but the dullest immatures show a yellow patch on the breast. Breeds in open woodlands with dense understory, especially mixed piñon-juniper and oak on steep slopes. Winters in western Mexico, where it prefers dense thickets and brushy habitat. Listen for sweet two- or three-parted warble. Compare with Nashville Warbler, but Virginia’s is always duller gray, especially on the back and wings.

It is mainly gray in color, with a lighter colored under-belly and a white eye ring. The rump and undertail coverts are yellow. They also have a yellow patch on their breast and a partially hidden dark reddish crest. Females are slightly duller, with less yellow on breast. Virginia's warbler can be easily mistaken for the rare Colima warbler, but it is smaller, has a more yellow rump, and is more widespread. Colima Warbler also lacks yellow breast patch.

Black-capped Piprites
Piprites pileata
Small and chunky manakin-like flycatcher with a short bill and big eyes. Mostly rusty with a black crown, a yellow bill, and yellow-edged flight feathers. Males have a cinnamon back, which is olive-green in females. Found in the canopy and subcanopy of montane forests where it normally accompanies mixed-species flocks. The song is a fast sequence of “chik, chik, cheeut, chee-unhh” notes.
Kashmir Flycatcher
Ficedula subrubra
Stubby little flycatcher with a highly restricted range; breeds in a corner of the northwestern Himalayas and winters in isolated pockets of hill forest in southern India and Sri Lanka. Male is gray above and bright orange below; female is paler, with only a faint orange wash on the chest. Note white panels on each side of the black tail. Breeds in forests at 1800-2700 meters of elevation, favoring areas with dense undergrowth. Winters in forested edge areas, including orchards and gardens.
Biak Scops-Owl
Otus beccarii
A small owl endemic to a variety of forests on Biak Island. Dark plumage, paler belly with fine barring and white lines from the shoulder. Gray-brown or tawny morphs occur. Yellow eyes surrounded by black patches, and a pale gray face surrounded by a black ring. Not particularly uncommon but difficult to see. Feeds on insects. It is the only owl species on Biak. Fairly vocal. Call, a low, croaking “raaag!”.
