Scaled Quail
Callipepla squamata
Small and rotund with intricate scaly pattern on neck and body. Looks silvery gray and brown overall; note short “cotton-top” crest. Plain face with no black, unlike Gambel’s Quail. Look for small groups scurrying around through grasslands or under cactus and mesquite trees in desert habitats. Occurs from eastern Colorado to central Mexico. Listen for hoarse calls.

Nile Valley Sunbird
Hedydipna metallica
Tiny sunbird with a relatively short bill. Male is unmistakable with a glossy green head, throat and back, a bright yellow belly, and extremely long thin tail. Females are yellowish below with a short tail and a whitish throat. Breeds in gardens, plantations, oases, and acacia scrub. Vocalizations similar to Palestine Sunbird, but both calls and song have a buzzing quality.
Emerald Tanager
Tangara florida
Well-named tanager, mostly emerald-green with trapezoidal black cheek patch, back streaking and wing markings. Small and active, usually found in pairs following mixed feeding flocks in foothill forests and edges. Feeds on fruit. Sexes alike.
Berylline Hummingbird
Saucerottia beryllina
Medium-sized hummingbird, usually fairly common in foothills. Favors oak woodlands, adjacent brushy thickets, and shade-coffee plantations, in both drier and more humid situations. Feeds at all levels and often rather aggressively chases off most other hummingbirds. Note the bright rusty wing patch and rusty tail (which often has purple and bronze highlights). Lower bill is red, but is often hard to see. Sexes similar, but female has duller, less buffy belly; birds from Chiapas south have a green belly.
