Yellow-rumped Siskin

An unmistakable, large ground bird. The unmistakable iridescent blue male spreads out its ornamental upper tail feathers when courting females. Females have a shorter tail, an iridescent green neck, and browner plumage. Found in forest, forest edge, and agricultural land. Often seen on paths or alertly feeding in the undergrowth. Can be fairly confiding especially when found close to human habitation. Its loud screaming “may-yow” calls are heard incessantly during the rainy season.

A medium-sized woodpecker with pale underparts that are covered with dark arrow-shaped markings. Has a bold facial pattern: crown is dark in the female and dark (forecrown) and red (hindcrown) in the male. Scarce and poorly known species that is found locally in lush patches of Miombo broadleaf woodland. Tends to feed on medium-sized and large tree branches. The calls include a weak rattling call, and a typical woodpecker “pik”. The drum is fast and repeated several times. Similar overall coloration to Bearded Woodpecker, but much smaller, without pale barring on the brown back, and with paler, arrow-marked underparts. Distinguished from other woodpeckers in its range by the unmarked brownish back.

Strange-looking bird with a tiny range, found exclusively on the islands of Tol South, Onei, Paata, and Polle, in Chuuk, Micronesia. Only in dense native old-growth montane forest, where it is often found close to the endemic poison tree (“panaw” in Chuukese). Most numerous on Tol South, where it is restricted to Mt. Winipot. Dark olive-brown all over, with bright orange legs and a white “teardrop” crescent under the eye. Long-bodied appearance is quite different from most white-eyes. Gives a long series of musical warbles.
