Short-tailed Paradigalla

Paradigalla brevicauda

A medium-sized, short-tailed bird of montane forest. All black plumage with iridescence on the head, fairly long bill and a distinctive, yellow wattle between the eye and the bill. Note the blue line below the base of the mouth. Feeds on fruit but also probes mossy branches for insects. Similar in size and shape to the male Loria’s Satinbird but Short-tailed Paradigalla has its unique yellow wattle. Voice, a long, mournful, monotone whistle.

识别特征

The short-tailed paradigalla is medium-sized, approximately 23 cm long, stocky black plumaged with slender black bill and bright yellow and blue wattles in front of each eye. The sexes are almost similar in appearance: the female is smaller than the male with a duller plumage and smaller wattles. The short-tailed paradigalla is distinguished from its nearest relative, the long-tailed paradigalla, by its smaller size, shorter tail feathers and lack of red on the wattles.

Friedmann's Lark

Friedmann's Lark

Mirafra pulpa

A small, compact lark with dark brown upperparts that appear scaly in fresh plumage, a streaked crown that can be raised as a crest, an indistinct tawny eyebrow, a striking pale throat, and a pale belly with dark breast streaks. The bill is bicolored: pale below with a dark ridge on the upper mandible. The tail is mostly dark with white outer feathers that are conspicuous in flight. Movements of this very localized lark are poorly known, but small groups are probably partial migrants and nomads in dense grassland with scattered bush; likely often goes undetected when not singing. Best identification feature is the diagnostic song, a single-note strident loud up-and-down “wheeeeoooo” whistle, repeated incessantly every two seconds for minutes at a time.

Imperial Cormorant

Imperial Cormorant

Leucocarbo atriceps

Very striking cormorant readily identified by white neck. Locally common black-and-white cormorant of colder coastal waters. Often seen perched on inshore rocks and jetties, sometimes with Magellanic Cormorant. Nests colonially on low islands (rarely in lakes inland from coast) and jetties. Plumage varies regionally, with some birds black-faced and others white-faced; the two types breed together locally in the Strait of Magellan. Immature resembles adult but plumage duller overall, brownish above.

Pale Chanting-Goshawk

Pale Chanting-Goshawk

Melierax canorus

A tall, long-tailed, pewter-gray hawk with pink-orange legs and bill base. In flight the wing pattern is strongly contrasting, with pale inner hind wings and a dark tip. Pairs inhabit thornveld, steppe, and desert below 2000 m. Chanting-goshawks give a strong gull-like “kleeeu” call, hence their name. Dark Chanting-Goshawk prefers moister woodland, has darker flight feathers creating a uniformly colored wing, and always has a gray-barred rump; Pale Chanting-Goshawk is paler, with pale panels in the wings and an unbarred white rump.
