Sibilant Sirystes
Sirystes sibilator
Quite large flycatcher that lives mostly in the canopy of forests and woodlands. Grayish overall, but note the black crested crown, black wings with prominent white edges, and a dark tail. Usually accompanies mixed-species flocks acting as a flock leader. The song is a loud and descending “pepepew-pepepew.”

It is found from northwestern Brazil to northeastern Argentina. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Small Blue Kingfisher
Alcedo coerulescens
Tiny sky-blue kingfisher with a snowy-white throat, belly, and facial patches. Male averages bluer than female, which has a greenish cast. Inhabits a wide range of freshwater and brackish habitats, including ponds, paddies, and mangroves. Like many other small kingfishers, hovers and hunts from a perch. Call is an extremely high-pitched metallic “tzeep!”
Chestnut Rail
Gallirallus castaneoventris
Secretive, very large rail (approaching Australasian Swamphen in size), only likely to be seen in and near mangroves, foraging in the mud along tidal creeks and estuaries in northern Australia. Olive brown above, chestnut below, with gray head, chalky yellow bill, and yellow legs. Calls loudly, with grunts and wild honking squawks.
Red-crested Malkoha
Dasylophus superciliosus
A large, long-tailed bird of lowland and foothill forest. Blackish in plumage, with a bluish gloss on the back and a white tail tip. Note the wide red eye-ring, the yellow bill with red at the base, and the shaggy red crest from the crown. Forages in vine tangles for insects and other animal prey. Similar in size and shape to Scale-feathered Malkoha, but Red-crested lacks the obvious white hood. Call is a sharp “jok!”
