East Coast Akalat

A standard Scytalopus tapaculo: plain dark gray with browner flanks and rump. Acts like a mouse, scurrying around on or near the ground within forests. Very difficult to see. Restricted range on west slope of Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. Occurs from around 350–1,000 m elevation, lower than Nariño Tapaculo. Far more often heard than seen. Listen for fairly slow series of piercing “peew” notes, much slower than Nariño.

The only flycatcher on the island of Fernando de Noronha. Olive-brown above, paler below, with three white wingbars. Occurs in wooded habitats throughout the island. Call is a series of fluted notes “thiu.” The Noronha Vireo has a very different shape and is smaller with a white eyebrow.

A fairly small bird of lowland and foothill forest and edge; endemic to Samar, Leyte, and Bohol, though lumped with Calabarzon Babbler under “Black-crowned Babbler” by some taxonomies. Has a gray back and cheek with fine pale streaks, dark wings and tail with white outer tail feathers, white underparts, a pale rufous throat, and a black crown. Note the slender black bill. Often joins mixed-species flocks and sometimes hangs upside down while feeding. Somewhat similar to Green-backed Whistler, especially from below, but smaller, with a pale rufous throat and a black crown. Voice includes a medium-pitched “poo piuu!” with the second note downslurred.
