Golden-crowned Manakin

A slow-moving and occasionally tail-twitching species of woodland thickets and dense cover; often found in mixed-species flocks. Note its black face and crown that is boldly marked with white spots and contrasts sharply with an entirely white throat. The similar Gray-crowned Palm-Tanager has a gray crown and a gray center to the throat. Vocalizations include a high thin “tseeoo” and “ts” as well as a nasal “byu.”

Small xenops of mature rainforest. Extensively streaked, tan body, with contrasting reddish wings and tail. Has a strong white eyebrow and lacks the bold white mustache of other xenopses. Compared to other xenopses, also has a straighter bill, and shorter tail. Creeps along branches like a nuthatch, often with mixed-species flocks. Fairly rare in most areas; most common in upland areas, but can also be found in seasonally flooded areas in smaller numbers.

Large, bright green parrot of humid evergreen forest in tropical lowlands. Uncommon. Found in rainforest and adjacent clearings, not in open habitats. Most often seen flying overhead early and late in the day, usually in pairs. Best field mark is the big pale eyering on a fairly plain head; with a good view, the bluish crown can be seen. Like other parrots in the same genus, in flight shows a red patch on the flight feathers.
