Madagascar Forest Rail
Mentocrex kioloides
Chunky rail with rich rufous coloration and a gray patch on the face. Found on the floor of eastern and northern rainforest, though it nests in trees. Usually in pairs or small groups. Very shy, and looks almost like a mammal when scurrying away from disturbance. Most common call is a long, ringing series of “kheow” notes. Also gives deep grunts and an explosive “tshak” call. Similar to Brown Mesite, but chunkier and shorter-tailed, with darker underparts. Told from Tsingy Wood-Rail by range. Smaller than White-throated Rail, with a shorter bill and a much smaller white throat patch.

Streak-capped Antwren
Terenura maculata
Tiny hyperactive antwren of the canopy in humid forest and second growth, where it often follows mixed-species flocks. Males are heavily streaked on the head and flanks with a rufous back, dark wings with pale yellowish underparts below. Females are similar, but are paler overall with a buffy throat and buffier streaking on the head. The song is a dry rattle.

Tiny woodpecker endemic to northeast Brazil. Gray above and whitish-buff below, with a black cap spotted white. Males have a red forehead. Found in deciduous and semi-deciduous forest, second growth, and nearby tall dry shrubs (caatinga). Call a high-pitched “sirr-sirr-sirr” and a descending trill “driée driée driée...”
Chestnut-crested Antbird
Rhegmatorhina cristata
Striking, medium-sized antbird, brown above and rich chestnut below, with a black face and broad white bare eye-ring. Females have thin black bars above. Inhabits the understory of humid forest, where it is always found foraging at army-ant swarms. The song is a series of ascending whistles that finishes with harsh descending notes.
