Sangihe Scops-Owl
Otus collari
A small, cryptically patterned brown owl confined to the island of Sangihe. Largely brown with scattered black streaks and patches and some indistinct pale markings on the wings. Occurs in forest, plantations, and patches of trees from the lowlands into the foothills. Unmistakable: the only small owl on the island, and the only one there with ear tufts. Gives a strident, high-pitched single “peuw” song note.

The scopes owls have a brown complexion to it. However, its facial disk has a pinch of white above the eyes. They have sporadic black streaks and patches as each bird is unique and excellent for camouflage in its forest habitat. The upper parts are brown with dark shaft streaks. The bird's eyes are yellow with red pupils. It has tan feathers in its midsection. Along with that, the Sangihe scops owl's call sounds similar to a frail whistle. Their call is high pitched and can last from 7–8 seconds long.

These birds are exclusive to the islands of Sangihe, mainly in North Sangihe in Southeast Asia next to Indonesia. They favor forests and mixed plantations. It is common and widespread on the island. They commonly reside in agricultural areas with trees up to 1150 feet and bushes.

Juan Fernandez Firecrown
Sephanoides fernandensis
Stunning and rather large hummingbird, found only on Robinson Crusoe Island in the Juan Fernandez archipelago. Locally fairly common in gardens, forest edges, native scrub, and groves of non-native Eucalyptus trees. Male is bright rusty orange overall with iridescent “firecrown” and an amazing song. Female looks very different: green above with a blue crown and flashy white tail sides, and white below with blue-green spotting. Smaller and very differently plumaged Green-backed Firecrown also occurs in same areas.
Great Black Hawk
Buteogallus urubitinga
Uncommon in forest, marshes, and mangroves, where usually greatly outnumbered by similar Common Black Hawk. Slightly larger and lankier than Common Black Hawk, with longer legs and tail, and adults of the two species have very different calls in flight. Adult Great Black has 2 white tail bands (1 on Common) and less extensive yellow in face. Immature looks whiter-headed than Common (no big black moustaches), and its longer tail has narrower and more numerous pale bars. Usually warier than Common, which can be quite unconcerned by people.
Cabot's Tragopan
Tragopan caboti
This creamy, partridge-like beauty is the only tragopan in its range and the world’s only pale-bellied tragopan. A thickset bird, usually encountered foraging in pairs in mid-altitude hill forest. Male is pale below and intricately spotted above, with pale polka dots on a black-and-chestnut background; has a similarly black-and-chestnut head with bright orange facial skin. Female is dark gray-brown with a slightly paler face and belly; wings and belly streaked paler. During courtship, male drums wings loudly and gives a bizarre, scarily infant-like waaah! followed by loud grunting notes.
