Chestnut-crowned Antpitta

A medium-sized kingfisher of mangroves and forested streams in the lowlands. Black face, blue crown and bright white throat are characteristic. Underparts of males vary geographically, some with rufous or dark bellies and a white crescent. Females have white belly. Perches in the understory, scanning below for its prey of fish or crabs. Very difficult to see. Somewhat similar to Azure Kingfisher, but Blue-black Kingfisher is distinctly larger with a dark chest or chest band. Call, a short nasal series “weeh-wiwiwi!” with an initial longer, rising note, then shorter falling notes.

A small dark brown swift of with a narrow whitish rump band; endemic to Sulawesi and the Moluccas. Includes the former Seram, Halmahera, and Sulawesi Swiftlets. Upperparts are darker brown than underparts. Flies acrobatically over a wide variety of habitats and elevations, often in flocks with other swiftlet species. Drab plumage and fast-flying habits can make this species difficult to distinguish from other small swifts; note pale, well-defined rump band (absent in Glossy Swiftlet, absent or poorly-defined in Uniform Swiftlet, and bright white in House Swift). Chitters squeakily.

Small warblerlike tanager. Note orange head, breast, and flanks, gray-brown back, and white belly. Sexes similar. Found in montane woodland, edges, and shrubby areas in the Andes from Colombia to Peru from around 1,800–3,200 m. Usually seen in pairs, which forage in the middle levels, often with mixed-species flocks. Compare with Brown-flanked Tanager in Peru, which has duller brown flanks that contrast with orange head and breast.
