Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo

Sleek songbird, a bit smaller than robin and much slimmer. Overall plain medium-gray with short bill, rather long tail, white eyering, and buff patches in wings. Note upright posture and white eyering. Found at higher elevations in the breeding season. Drops into lowlands in the winter. Loves juniper. Song is complex; call is a single, ringing, bell-like note.

Medium-sized nondescript flycatcher that usually shows an erect crest without white markings. Very similar to others Elaenia species and is best identified by its song—a gravelly “jer-jéhjeh,” and its call—a soft “wee.” Also note its olive-green back, grayish breast, pale belly, and two wingbars. Inhabits open areas with scattered trees and savanna woodlands where it usually perches very upright on the top of shrubs or trees.

Small and distinctive dark-brown-and-white barbet. The amount of white on the face varies geographically, but there is always a white stripe behind the eye. Found in forest, forest edge, moist woodland, and moist scrub. Usually in small and vocal groups; often perched in prominent dead trees. The call is an agitated “kiik” that is often repeated. Separated from other barbets by the white ear patch and lack of yellow or olive-green tones to the plumage.
