Vernal Hanging-Parrot
Loriculus vernalis
Tiny, short-tailed green parrot. Note bright red bill and red rump. Male has a bright powder-blue throat patch. Often perches high in the forest canopy and proves difficult to see; listen for its odd, high-pitched “zi-zi-zi” given while in flight. Inhabits wooded habitats from primary forest to agricultural edge; some populations undertake regional migrations.

Mountain Trogon
Trogon mexicanus
Fairly large trogon of pine and pine-oak forests in highlands; usually at upper levels in trees and often rather shy. Male is striking, with big, bold white squares on underside of tail. Female has broken white eyering on brown head and coarse black-and-white pattern under the tail. Elegant Trogon overlaps in range and can be told from Mountain by the coppery color on the top of the tail (male) or by the white stripe behind the eye (female). Also note the finely patterned tail on both male and female Elegant Trogons. The similar but smaller Collared Trogon is found mainly at lower elevation and has much finer barring on the underside of the tail.

Sooty Ant-Tanager
Driophlox gutturalis
Rather large, chunky tanager endemic to northwestern Colombia. Unlikely to be mistaken. Male isall sooty gray with striking red throat and crest. Female is similar to male but slightly duller. Occurs in the lowlands up to around 1,100 m. Typically seen in pairs or small groups in the understory of forest, often near water. Frequently follows mixed-species flocks.

Yellow-throated Tanager
Iridosornis analis
A well-named and colorful tanager found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes. Blazing yellow throat stands out sharply against its otherwise mostly bluish plumage. Also note black face and rusty vent. No range overlap with the similar Purplish-mantled Tanager. Usually stays low in the forest, though occasionally ventures higher at a fruiting tree. Not strongly associated with mixed-species flocks.
