Orange-footed Megapode
Megapodius reinwardt
Large gray-brown bird with a pointed crest on its head and massive orange legs and feet. Resident on the floors of tropical rainforests. This species builds very large nest mounds (so large they almost look like earthworks). Also found in cosmopolitan parks and gardens. Note loud crowing call.

It is a terrestrial bird the size of a domestic chicken and dark-coloured with strong orange legs and a pointed crest at the back of the head. It utilises a range of forest and scrub habitats and has colonised many small islands throughout its range. It is prolific in suburban Darwin gardens, where people refer to it as a bush chook, bush chicken, or bush turkey.

There are 5 subspecies. Some of the subspecies may be treated as full species, such as the Tanimbar scrubfowl (Megapodius tenimberensis), while other subspecies may be considered subspecies of other species (e.g., M. r. buruensis is sometimes considered a subspecies of the dusky megapode).

Eye-ringed Tody-Tyrant
Hemitriccus orbitatus
Tiny flycatcher found in the lower levels of interior of humid lowland forests. Note the conspicuous white eyerings and pale spot under the eye. It has an olive-brown back, pale wing edges, a streaky olive breast, and yellow belly. The song is a squeaky trill.
Ultramarine Grosbeak

Stunning dark blue bird with a huge bill. Male is mostly deep cobalt with paler highlights on the shoulder and eyebrow and a darker patch around the eye. Female is rich reddish-brown overall. Found singly or in pairs in scrubby wooded habitats, often near water. Can be skulky, preferring to forage in dense thickets. Occurs mostly in southeastern South America, with disjunct populations in Venezuela and Colombia. Compare with Blue-black Grosbeak, which doesn’t overlap much in range and is typically found in heavier forest.
Black-capped Antwren
Herpsilochmus atricapillus
Small, long-tailed antwren of the middle to upper levels of woodlands and dry forests. Males are gray with a contrasting black cap and eyebrow. The tail is black and white-tipped and the wings are black with white bars. In females note the cinnamon forehead, gray back and buff belly. The song is loud and usually given as a duet.
