Small social songbird, often encountered foraging in upper levels of forest. Mostly olive-green above with a yellow undertail. Belly, chest, and throat gray. Note the smudgy black patch in front of the eye and bright white eye-ring. Found in forest and forest edge from around 900 to 1950 meters of elevation. Lesser Prairie-Chicken

Tympanuchus pallidicinctus

Plump chickenlike bird found in grasslands. Body and wings entirely barred brown with paler buffy throat. In spring, males gather at display site and perform dance to attract females: look for them hunched over with ear-like feathers protruding from atop head and darker reddish-orange skin exposed on the neck. Inconspicuous and difficult to find away from display sites. Very similar to Greater Prairie-Chicken but no range overlap. Averages slightly paler and smaller than Greater.

Swahili Sparrow

Swahili Sparrow

Passer suahelicus

A drab sparrow of East Africa, gray with brown wings and a bright rufous rump and shoulder. Generally common within its range in savanna, in cultivated areas, and around human habitation. Very similar to Northern Gray-headed Sparrow, but separated by darker underparts, less contrasting pale throat, and grayer back. Also very similar to Parrot-billed Sparrow, but slightly smaller and slimmer-billed with paler underparts. The call is a husky “churp” and the song a series of similar notes.
