Sulawesi Nightjar

Tiny hummingbird with a white rump band found in the Atlantic Rainforest region. Adult male has a fantastic iridescent green headdress consisting of a flowing beard ending in white spots, and a glittering face and forehead. Female and young male lack these features and have a white throat with a dark smudge in the center; they are similar to female Frilled Coquette, but lack buff on the face and throat. Feeds on a wide variety of flowers at almost any level, and regularly visits feeders in some areas.

Tiny, skulking rail-like bird that is unlikely to be seen unless you’re expressly looking for it. The male is boldly red and black with white stripes, while the female is brownish and much plainer. Found on the ground in forest, scrub, heath, and wetlands in eastern, central, and northern Madagascar. Extremely shy and elusive, and most often detected by voice: a loud and explosive couple of “ki-dit” calls followed by a very long series of shorter “kit” notes. Much shorter-billed than the very rare Slender-billed Flufftail. All other rails are larger and have different coloration.

Large, spectacular malkoha of moist lowland and mid-hill forest. Unmistakable with bright red face, yellowish bill, white belly and long, white-tipped tail. Found in the dense canopy of tall trees where it feeds on insects and small vertebrates. Normally found in pairs and often associates with mixed flocks usually led by Orange-billed Babblers. It can be hard to see despite its flashy appearance. Usually silent but does soft clucking and a call like static noise.
