Black-and-cinnamon Fantail
Rhipidura nigrocinnamomea
A fairly small, long-tailed bird of montane forest on Mindanao. Rufous above with darker wings, a tail frequently held cocked and fanned, pale orange underparts, a black hood, and a broad white eyebrow. Forages in the understory for insects and often joins mixed-species flocks. Bundok Flycatcher and Eyebrowed Thrush both have orange chest, a black head, and a white brow, but Black-and-cinnamon Fantail is larger than the flycatcher and smaller than the thrush, with a totally different shape and habits. Voice includes a sharp “gyuk!” or grating chatter.

Gray-sided Bush Warbler
Cettia brunnifrons
Small brown bush warbler with a bright rufous crown, gray belly, and striking pale eyebrow. Frosty-pale throat contrasts with darker neck and breast. Paler gray upperparts, cleaner-looking white eyebrow, and smaller size distinguish this species from Chestnut-crowned Bush Warbler. Other brown bush warblers are smaller or duller, lacking the rufous crown. Gray-sided is generally fairly skulking, foraging in or on the ground in dense vegetation, but occasionally emerges out into the open, particularly to sing. Breeds in forest edges, clearings, and open shrubby areas in montane areas up to the treeline; winters in bushy edge areas in lower foothills. Song is a brief spurt of tinkling high-pitched notes followed by a buzzy whine. Call notes are high-pitched “tseep” and “tzzi” notes.

Buff-breasted Wheatear
Oenanthe bottae
A chunky, pale, brownish wheatear of mountain habitats in southwestern Arabia. Note the white eyebrow, black eye stripe, clean white throat, and buff breast. The tail is mostly black with a white base and rump, forming a thick “T” pattern that is conspicuous in flight. Found in open habitats at high elevations. The song is a long, complex mix of many different components, both scratchy and musical, sometimes given in a flight display. Similar overall to several other species of wheatears, but no other species shows a combination of large size, long legs, black-and-white pattern on the face, and buff breast.

Andaman Cuckooshrike
Coracina dobsoni
A stocky, medium-sized cuckooshrike with a heavy, dark bill. Similar to Large Cuckooshrike, but the Andaman Cuckooshrike is slightly smaller, slimmer, and darker gray on the upperparts; lacks white tail tips; and has strong barring all through the underparts. Inhabits dense forests, where it is uncommon and sticks to the high canopy.
