Schneider's Pitta
Hydrornis schneideri
Large-headed and long-legged, this rare and rotund Sumatran endemic is found only in foothill forests between 900 to 2400 meters (typically in the upper half), where it is most easily detected by its strange song, a spaceship-like “oowOOOOwooWOOH.” Male has a sky-blue back and incomplete black collar, while the female has a dull brownish back and a dull blue tail. Both sexes have a rich cinnamon crown and nape, as well as a dark line extending behind the eye. Juvenile is strange-looking, with white spots on the crown, wings, and breast. Forages quietly on the forest floor, either singly or in pairs.

Schneider's pitta (Hydrornis schneideri) is a species of bird in the family Pittidae. It is endemic to Sumatra in Indonesia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is threatened by habitat loss. It was rediscovered in 1988 after last being seen in 1918.

Dumpy little bird, slaty-blue with a tan belly. Highly restricted and scattered range in the Nilgiri Hills, where it is found at 900-2100 meters of elevation in sholas (patches of stunted montane forest separated by open grassy areas). Shy and retiring, foraging primarily on the ground and in dense undergrowth. Song is surprisingly long-winded for such a small bird and is composed of high warbling notes and buzzy whistles.

Males are striking black-and-white flycatchers with a conspicuous complete white collar, all dark tail, and white rump. Females can be difficult to separate from other flycatchers but have a large white primary patch on the wing. Breeds in deciduous forests, nesting in cavities and quick to take advantage of nest boxes. Spends much of the non-breeding season in miombo and other broad-leaved woodlands. The song is a high-pitched series of whistled notes; alarm call is a dry "pik."

Medium-sized antbird. Males are black with a large white patch on the back and females are brown overall, paler below, with grayish sides of the head. Inhabits the understory of humid forest, including the forest edge and light gaps, and also tall adjacent second growth. Regularly attends army-ant swarms. The song is a loud descending series of “peek” notes, and the call is a rattle.
