Tanimbar Bush Warbler
Horornis carolinae
A long-billed brown warbler with a prominent buff eyebrow, a russet cap, a white throat, and a gray underside. An arboreal species that inhabits thick understory of forest, edges, bamboo thickets, and scrub. Restricted to Yamdena in the Tanimbar Islands. Unstreaked upperparts separate it from the other brown warbler-like birds in range, Tawny Grassbird and Zitting and Golden-headed Cisticolas. Distinctive song, characteristic of bush warblers, begins with a building, ascending three-part whistle with a significantly drawn-out third note, before jumbled fourth note: “tu-tu-tuooooo-chyop.” Also gives abrupt “chup” calls.

Yellow-crowned Euphonia
Euphonia luteicapilla
Small finchlike bird, compact and short tailed. Generally yellow below and dark blue-black above with stout, short bill. To identify male euphonias, focus on crown and throat: Yellow-crowned has an entirely yellow crown and a dark throat. Females extremely difficult to separate from other euphonias but often seen in pairs or small groups with males. Frequents open forested habitats, edges, and gardens. Can form mixed feeding flocks with other species such as warblers and tanagers.
Little Slaty Flycatcher
Ficedula basilanica
A small bird of tangled undergrowth in lowland and foothill forest. White below with pale orange legs. Male has dark gray upperparts and a short white stripe behind each eye. Upperparts are dark brown in female with no head stripes. Female similar to Chestnut-tailed Jungle-Flycatcher, but has orange legs and a dark brown rather than chestnut tail. Song consists of short, varied whistled notes, often in a rising or falling series. Also gives single thin high downslurred whistles.
Pale-headed Rosella
Platycercus adscitus
Pale yellow and blue rosella with characteristic white and yellow head. Endemic to the northern parts of eastern Australia where it may hybridize with other rosellas. Occurs in a wide range of open habitats, and mostly in pairs rather than large flocks. Reasonably common in suburban areas, although it can be hard to find.
