Spiny Babbler

A plain, sparrow-sized honeyeater with a slender, downcurved bill like a sunbird’s. Entirely rich olive above, plain gray on face and throat, with a yellow wash on the underparts. Restricted to the islands of Lombok, Sumbawa, and Flores. Plainer than Indonesian Honeyeater, lacking that species’ prominent pale facial skin, yellow wing panel, and a dark mask. Sunda is also noticeably more yellow underneath. Calls include a constant twittering, a nasal “jeez,” and a guttural “grrt.”

Large nightjar with dark plumage and long wings. Has blackish-brown broad spots and streaks above and is brown and white spotted below. Note the buffy collar on the nape. Males have a white tipped tail while the female’s tail tips are buffy. Found at the forest edge and in the forest interior, preferring thickets and areas with a bamboo understory. The song is a mournful and undulating “doh, wheo, eeo,” often repeated for long periods.

A large, entirely dark honeyeater. Plumage becomes paler from the shoulders back, turning blackish to yellowish-olive. Note the caramel-colored moustache stripe below the eye. Dependent on native primary forest in foothills and montane areas. Voice includes a sequence of rising nasal piping notes, vocal and loud.
