Sumba Flycatcher
Ficedula harterti
A small rufous-brown flycatcher. Rufescent above and pale below, with rufous patches on the breast sides. Occupies lower understory of lowland forest and forest edge, singly or in pairs. Juveniles show two pale wingbars. Confined to the island of Sumba. Combination of rufescent upperparts, absence of eye-ring, and entirely dark bill separates this species from Sumba Brown, Flores Jungle, and Asian Brown Flycatchers. Simple song is a short series of evenly pitched whistled notes, sometimes interspersed with a short, buzzy rattle. Also gives cicada-like “tzeeee” and “chikik” calls.

Pohnpei Flycatcher
Myiagra pluto
Small monarch flycatcher with uniformly dark glossy plumage. Endemic to Pohnpei Island, where it is the only small all-dark bird on the island; male Micronesian Starling is also glossy and dark, but is much larger, with yellow eyes. Inhabits forests and forest edges, often “flycatching” from a perch close to the ground. Gives a series of bright rising whistles, as well as a squeaky descending chatter and harsh rasping notes.

Rufous-winged Cisticola
Cisticola galactotes
Relatively colorful, mid-sized, long-tailed cisticola of wetlands. Note the brown back with thick black streaks, rufous on the wing and cap, and whitish underparts. Found in reedbeds, and locally in wet scrub. Song varies across the range. Song a slow series of rough “chyup” notes. Similar to Levaillant’s Cisticola, but Rufous-winged has a gray or brown tail and an unstreaked rump. Relatively bold colors separate the two from other cisticolas.

Blue-billed Teal
Spatula hottentota
Small brownish duck with a blue bill, dark cap, and a dark smudge on the pale tan cheek. In flight, look for white, black, and green stripes on the wing. Found on freshwater wetlands, lakes, and rice paddies, at low to moderate elevations. Combination of small size, blue bill, and cheek marking separate it from all other ducks and grebes.
