Coastal Boubou
Laniarius nigerrimus
Strangely variable boubou that can be all black, black above and white below with a small white wingbar, or black above and white below with a yellow eyebrow and a yellow wash on the throat and breast. Uses habitats with a dense understory, including thickets, riparian woodland, and coastal scrub. Usually found in pairs. Black-and-white birds very similar to Zanzibar Boubou, though birds with this coloration may be rare or absent in the western part of the range, where the two species overlap. All-black birds are quite similar to Slate-colored Boubou, but blacker, with different vocalizations. The typical song is a duet in which the male makes a ringing “ku-wee” while the female simultaneously makes a low “chrr” note. Identification of this recently split species is confusing.
识别特征
The adult has glossy blue-black except for white spots on the rump, visible when the wings are spread and the rump feathers are erected. The underparts are white with a buffy or pinkish tinge on the breast and flanks. The bill is black; the eyes are dark reddish brown. The wings have white median coverts. The juvenile is similar but duller, with a greyish-brown bill, the upperparts mottled by yellowish-ochre to tawny feather tips, and dusky-barred flanks. The Somali boubou differs from tropical boubou in that it is smaller and has less white in the wing.

New Caledonian Cuckooshrike
Edolisoma anale
A mostly dark-gray cuckooshrike with distinctive dark rufous undertail coverts. Note dark eye. Locally common in remnant higher-quality hilly and montane habitat. The only other cuckooshrike regular on New Caledonia, South Melanesian Cuckooshrike, is more accepting of disturbed habitats. It also has a bright yellow eye and is notably more bluish-tinged gray than New Caledonian Cuckooshrike, and lacks the rufous vent of that species.
Jackal Buzzard
Buteo rufofuscus
A large, heavy buzzard with striking black, chestnut, and white patterning that is especially evident in flight. Occupies a wide range of open habitats, where it sits on poles, fences, and rocks hunting for small and large vertebrates. The harsh scolding “kaaaa-haa-haa” call is distinctive and similar to that of a jackal. A rare pale-chested morph can resemble Augur Buzzard, but Jackal Buzzard is always differentiated by the dark (not pale) forward part of the underwing. The brown-and-rufous juvenile Jackal Buzzard is similar to other buzzards, but it is larger, with broad wings and a hefty head.
Brown Twinspot
Clytospiza monteiri
An unusual, beautiful twinspot with a gray hood, a red rump, and a rufous breast and belly covered in white “twin spots.” Males have a red central throat stripe and females a white one. Found in areas with thick undergrowth, including lush savanna, overgrown cultivated areas, and forest edge. Often in pairs or small groups. Most similar to Dybowski's Twinspot, but separated by many details, including the brown back and the rufous underparts with twin spots extending onto the breast. The call is a harsh “veet” and the song is a variable, high-pitched twittering.
